Survey Chainman/Land Survey Assistant
McInnis Engineering is seeking a motivated Survey Chainman to join our Tacoma office. While prior experience is not mandatory, preference will be given to candidates with a few years of experience in a similar role and a keen interest in building a career in land surveying. Knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil3D is preferred, as candidates with these skills may also assist with drafting survey documents.
Job Responsibilities
Assist the Chief Surveyor both in the field and office, performing typical chainman duties
Conduct field surveys, including setting up and operating survey equipment
Provide support for various tasks as assigned by the Chief Surveyor
Draft survey documents using AutoCAD and Civil3D
Work under the supervision of licensed surveyors to support land development and civil engineering projects
Qualifications
Interest in pursuing a career in land surveying
Prior experience as a survey chainman is preferred but not required
Knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil3D is preferred
Ability to work in outdoor environments and handle physical tasks related to land surveying
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Willingness to learn and adapt to various field conditions and tasks

Survey Party Chief
McInnis Engineering is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Survey Party Chief to lead field survey teams in conducting various types of land surveys. The ideal candidate will have experience managing survey crews, conducting fieldwork, and overseeing the collection of survey data for civil engineering and land surveying projects. The Survey Party Chief will ensure that all work is performed accurately, efficiently, and safely, while adhering to industry standards and project requirements.
Job Responsibilities:
Field Survey Leadership: Lead a field survey crew in performing topographic, boundary, construction staking, and other types of land surveys for civil engineering and land development projects.
Data Collection: Operate survey instruments, including total stations, GPS units, and data collectors, to gather precise measurements and survey data.
Crew Management: Direct and train survey crew members, ensuring that they follow established procedures and maintain productivity.
Survey Calculations: Perform survey-related calculations, including but not limited to angles, distances, elevations, and coordinate geometry.
Project Coordination: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure that survey work meets project specifications and deadlines.
Documentation: Prepare detailed field notes, sketches, and survey records. Ensure that all survey data is accurate, organized, and properly documented for use by the design team.
Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and procedures during field operations. Identify and mitigate potential risks to crew members and equipment.
Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and calibration of survey equipment to ensure accurate and reliable performance.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; a degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or related field is a plus.
3-5 years of experience in land surveying, with at least 2 years in a party chief or crew leader role.
Proficiency with survey instruments such as total stations, GPS systems, data collectors, and AutoCAD. Experience with survey software such as Trimble, Leica, or Carlson is a plus.
Thorough understanding of land surveying principles, construction staking, and field procedures. Knowledge of local, state, and federal surveying regulations and standards.
Strong leadership and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with team members, project managers, and clients. Detail-oriented and able to work under tight deadlines.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain. Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license or Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certification is a strong plus.
Familiarity with civil engineering projects, land development, and construction survey practices.

Project Manager/Sr. Project Engineer
The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience in the civil engineering and land-planning business in the local area. Knowledge of other parts of the design business is a plus. The job responsibilities will include working with project clients and owners to conceptualize projects that meet their goals, coordinating entitlement and design work with clients, owners, and other team members on early-stage projects, developing and managing project budgets, working with local agencies as projects develop and are entitled and ultimately permitted, training junior staff in the skills required to produce successful projects and succeed in the business.
We are seeking a candidate with: knowledge of projects and design firms in the local area, knowledge of project procedures in South Sound jurisdictions, the ability to communicate effectively with clients, owners, and team members, understanding of project design requirements and procedures, the ability to teach younger staff, and the ability to deliver projects on time and on budget. While a professional license is a strong preference, it is not a requirement.
